Councils agree on Flitwick leisure
Proposals to redevelop leisure facilities in Flitwick, Bedfordshire, are finally being put in action.
A new Football Centre will be built on land currently owned by Bedfordshire County Council to make way for the development of a new leisure centre on the town’s existing football pitches.
Mid Beds District Council — to be known as Central Bedfordshire from April — and Flitwick Town Council will now proceed with the joint project by submitting a full planning application for the Football Centre and outline permission for Flitwick Leisure Centre this month.
Anita Lewis, leisure, culture and safer communities portfolio holder, said: “We are pleased to be moving forward with this partnership project which will greatly enhance the facilities for people in Flitwick.
“It may seem like a big outlay but in these times of credit crunch, big projects like this will help the economy. Also, in the long-term, a new leisure centre will be more energy efficient, more green and offer a big range of activities for people in the town and surrounding area.”
A grant application for funding will also be made to the Football Foundation in April, with an expectant outcome known this autumn.
If approved, work on the Football Centre could start this December, with completion scheduled for September 2010, when work on the new leisure centre will kick off. The entire project should be completed by the end of 2011.
