DC Leisure reveals final design for £35m PFI project
Management company DC Leisure and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council have signed the final agreement for a £35m PPP/PFI scheme which includes the build and operation of four leisure facilities in the town.
DC Leisure, along with its funding partner Barclays, will design, build, finance and operate a swimming pool complex, two dual-use facilities and a leisure centre, which will all be built by Willmott Dixon and maintained by EMCOR.
Peter Kirkham, development and PFI director at DC Leisure, said: “We’re extremely pleased to have reached this significant landmark in partnership with Rotherham Council.
“We’re now looking forward to the start of the building work which will see us get ever closer to our ultimate goal of providing the local community with an extensive range of high-quality leisure facilities.”
St Ann’s Central Rotherham Pool will comprise a 25m, six-lane swimming pool with a moveable floor, 25m leisure and teaching pool with river runs and flumes, six-court sports hall, squash courts, health and fitness suites and a climbing wall.
The dual-use facilities, located on or adjacent to secondary school sites at Aston and Wath, will include a main pool and learner pool, fitness suite and sports hall, while a further site at Maltby will boast a 25m, six-lane swimming pool with moveable floor, diving pool, sports hall and fitness suite.
It is anticipated that the leisure facilities will attract one million visits per year.
Funding for the scheme came via a £25m PFI grant from the DCMS and the Department for Communities and Local Government. Additional funding came from the Lottery’s New Opportunities Fund, the Rotherham Primary Care Trust and the council.
Building work will be underway at St Ann’s by the end of the month, with the majority of the new facilities reaching completion in 2008, as scheduled.
DC Leisure will operate the centres on a 32-year contract from the time of opening.
