The Fitness Industry Association (FIA) has linked up with SkillsActive to improve professional standards in the fitness industry.

The three-year agreement means the FIA will have a greater say in SkillsActive activities, which, as the Sector Skills Council for the fitness industry, is responsible for setting training standards and is also responsible for the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs).

As part of the deal, FIA members will gain automatic membership to SkillsActive, which includes exclusive access to a database of National Occupational Standards via the SkillsActive website (www.skillsactive.com), a free monthly e-zine with information on new training and education developments, access to a careers advisory service and advice on funding opportunities for training.

“This agreement with SkillsActive demonstrates our commitment to raising the standards of professionalism within the health and fitness industry,” said Andrée Deane, communications director of the FIA. ‘It is great news for consumers and for public and private sector members.”

Stephen Studd, chief executive of SkillsActive, added: “There is a need for consumers to know that their leisure time is spent under the tuition of fully qualified and competent instructors. This strategic partnership will send a serious message to the government that greater public funding for skills is required.”
