Glasgow launches cultural facility in Easterhouse
An innovative cultural facility bringing together sport, arts and learning under one roof – The Bridge – has opened in Glasgow’s deprived Easterhouse area.
The Bridge combines the new John Wheatley College building, the refurbished Easterhouse swimming pool, the new Easterhouse library and Platform – a new arts facility housing the National Theatre of Scotland and local dance company Visual Statement.
As part of the improved facilities, the new library will include a centre for Lifelong Learning, while the refurbished 25m swimming pool now also includes a learner pool and a health suite.
In addition, Platform will provide greater access to the arts through an accessible arts programme featuring theatre, music and the visual arts. Facilities include a 200-seat auditorium, a studio theatre, a workshop and meeting space, recording facilities and a café.
Cllr Jim Coleman, deputy leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “The Bridge is a fantastic new facility for Easterhouse and for Glasgow. It is without doubt one of the finest examples of an integrated campus for sport, culture and learning in the UK. The Bridge will allow users to develop their potential in sport, the arts and education, learn new skills and improve their health.”
Funding for project came from the council, the European Regional Development Fund, the Scottish Arts Council, the Glasgow Community Planning Partnership, sportscotland, NHS Greater Glasgow and John Wheatley College. Details: www.platform-online.co.uk
