New healthy living centre for Surrey
By Caroline Wilkinson
Plans for a new £37m healthy living centre in New Cross Gate, south east London, have been approved by the London Borough of Lewisham. The development is part of a government funded initiative to regenerate 39 'poverty postcodes' in London.
Under the government scheme, called New Deal for Communities (NDC), the healthy living centre will include a 0.5 hectare town square – part of the Mayor of London's aim to provide the city with 100 new public spaces.
When completed, the development will also include a health centre to accommodate eight GPs and a pharmacy, a gym and leisure facility as well as a library, a cafe and a creche. The project will also boast 172 new homes.
The New Cross Gate NDC was allocated £45m by the government in 2001 to regenerate the area over the next ten years.
The initiative has already funded 20 local health-related projects, including the Millwall Community Sports Coach Project, which is aimed to get local people involved in physical activity and to establish more sports clubs. There is also the Ahoy Centre's watersports programme and MEND, an initiative to help educate families with obese youth about diet and exercise.
A spokesperson for the project said: "By the year 2011, people living in New Cross Gate will enjoy improved health and well-being. We will also work towards equal access to connected comprehensive and culturally sensitive local health, leisure and social services.
"New Cross Gate NDC is working with a wide range of partners in order to promote healthy lifestyle opportunities for the benefit of local people. It funds a wide range of projects and works closely with local community-based organisations such as African Community Partnership (ACP)and larger borough-wide agencies like Lewisham Primary Care Trust (PCT) with the aim of improving the health of local people."
The construction of the New Cross Gate NDC is expected to take 20 months and to be complete by 2011.
