New-look Wrexham leisure centre opens
Gwyn Evans Leisure and Activity Centre in Gwersyllt, Wrexham, has reopened to the public, following the completion of a major £750,000 refurbishment.
Work has included the creation of a new first floor, which boasts a 25-station fitness studio, Wrexham County Borough Council's (WCBC) national exercise GP referral scheme and offices. An improved swimming pool spectator area and reception area also featured as part of the renovation work, which commenced in December 2009.
A spokeperson for the council said that the revamp forms part of a prudential borrowing scheme, which had been complemented by a 'parachute payment' from Sport Wales. The prudential scheme enabled WCBC to borrow funding for the scheme, while the Sport Wales contribution is designed to allow the facility to build up revenue bases.
Bob Dutton, lead member for communities and performance for the council, added: "Gwyn Evans is an excellent local community facility and with the recent refurbishment it stands out as one of the leading sporting excellence centres in the area that the Gwersyllt can be proud of."
