Sport England to part-fund Durham facility
Sport England is to provide a £250,000 grant towards the cost of a new swimming pool and leisure complex in Durham.
The flagship property will be located at Freeman’s Place in the city centre and is being developed by the City of Durham Council in order to replace the existing Durham City pool at Old Elvet, which is more than 70 years old.
The new leisure facility will boast an eight-lane, 25m competition-standard swimming pool, a learner pool, a four-court sports hall, a fully furnished dance studio, a 100-station fitness suite and a changing village.
Judith Rasmussen, regional director of Sport England North East, said: “Sport England is very pleased to be part of the new leisure centre development in the city. As well as the pool, the new indoor sports and fitness facilities will provide opportunities for the whole of the city.”
Carol Woods, the council’s portfolio holder for the environment and leisure, added: “Support from Sport England to help fund this development is greatly welcomed and will help boost participation in sport and fitness activities and enable the centre to host large regional swimming events.”
Work on the complex is due to begin this month, with a completion date of March 2008. Details: www.durhamcity.gov.uk
