Virgin Active targets Italy
Virgin Active has announced plans to open 20 new clubs, the majority in Italy, as it reported a 28 per cent rise in underlying full-year earnings to £76.2m.
The fitness chain, which has 168 clubs globally, already has nine in Italy; of the 20 new facilities, just over half will be in this market, with Perugia next to open. Other territories on the radar for expansion include Portugal, South Africa and Dubai.
Virgin Active’s latest Italian club opened in Milan on 22 May. The 4,500sq m, 6,000-capacity facility offers a fitness suite, four studios, indoor and outdoor pools, a wet area with sauna, steamroom, hydro-massage and Turkish bath, and a day spa.
Supplied by Technogym, the facility also has equipment from Star Trac, Power Plate, Escape, Nautilus and Unimed.
Harry Harris, director of European key accounts for Star Trac, says: “We have a global deal with Virgin Active but, to date, Italy has not taken the product.
“After three years of negotiations, we’re delighted that Virgin Active Italy has chosen our NXT Spinner bike to complement this state of the art facility.”
