Sustainable fitness
Life Fitness has supplied the equipment for the health and fitness facility on Queen Margaret University's new £100m sustainable campus in Edinburgh.
Available for use by students, staff and the local community, the facility - part of the campus's sports centre - includes a 125sq m gym featuring 45 pieces of resistance and cardio kit, an exercise studio, a mixed-use sports hall and an outdoor floodlit AstroTurf pitch.
The £100,000 installation is reported to represent the first contract win for Life Fitness in a Scottish university for five years.
Members will benefit from a range of classes, as well as personal training and free nutrition advice.
The centre also aims to continue its popular children’s play club and summer activity programme throughout the school holidays. Local football clubs and badminton teams have already booked slots in the sports hall and staff are in talks with local schools regarding outreach work.
At 35 acres, the new campus is home to 4,500 students and staff and aims to set a new benchmark in sustainable design to enable the campus to have the lowest carbon footprint of all higher education organisations in the UK.
This includes the use of a woodchip boiler with a projected 75 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emission compared with traditional gas fired heating, plus a sustainable urban drainage system to capture rainwater from roofs and paved areas.
